Today’s Google Doodle honors the Romanian greatest physicist Ștefania Mărăcineanu. On June 18, 2022, Google Doodle celebrates physicist Ștefania Mărăcineanu’s 140th birthday after 77 years of her death.

Who Was Ștefania Mărăcineanu?

Ștefania Mărăcineanu was a popular Romanian physicist. Ștefania Mărăcineanu died on August 15, 1944, at the age of 62 years in Bucharest, the Kingdom of Romania due to cancer being affected by radiation as per some reports. After 77 years of her death, Google Doodle decided to celebrate Ștefania Mărăcineanu’s 140th birthday on June 18, 2022.

Ștefania Mărăcineanu was born on 18 June 1882 in Bucharest, the Kingdom of Romania, and at the time of her death in 1944, Ștefania Mărăcineanu’s age was 62 years. Now after her death she was buried in her native in Bucharest and her Resting place is at Bellu Cemetery.

Ștefania Mărăcineanu’s Thesis is Research on the polonium constant and on the penetration of radioactive substances into metals (1924) and Ștefania Mărăcineanu has worked with the greatest  Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist Marie Curie, who was her Doctoral advisor.

Ștefania Mărăcineanu’s contributions to the physic are very impressive because she has done many types of research and also many experiments such as the half-life of polonium and devised methods of measuring alpha decay, the possibility of sunlight inducing radioactivity, and investigating the link between radioactivity and rainfall, and rainfall with earthquakes. Alongside teaching, she was also served in the Romanian Academy of Sciences, in the Physics section as a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy of Sciences, Physics section and she was the Director of Research and Associate Professor.

Ștefania Mărăcineanu was born to her parents Sebastian Mărăcineanu and Sevastia, who were very young at the time when Ștefania Mărăcineanu was born. Ștefania Mărăcineanu attended Central School for Girls high school for her high school studies and the University of Bucharest, for her college studies where she graduated with a degree in physical and chemical sciences. Ștefania Mărăcineanu loved teaching and she started her career teaching at the Central School for Girls in Bucharest. Ștefania Mărăcineanu received her Doctorate degree in Ph.D. from the Radium Institute. Ștefania Mărăcineanu later retired from her work in 1942. Ștefania Mărăcineanu’s research and experiments won many Nobel prizes and she also won many awards for her service. Ștefania Mărăcineanu is remembered by many institutions and research centers and she is honored every year on her birthday by various online platforms like Google Doodle honored her today.
